Is Pest Control family-friendly?
It's the most common question we hear from Utah County families: "Is Pest Control Family-Friendly for my kids and pets?" The short answer is yes — when applied by a licensed professional using modern products. Here's everything you need to know.
How Modern Pest Control Products Work
The pest control industry has evolved dramatically. The broad-spectrum pesticides of past decades have been largely replaced by targeted, low-toxicity formulations that are specifically designed for residential use. Products used by licensed professionals today go through extensive EPA registration processes that evaluate safety for humans, pets, and the environment.
The active ingredients in most modern exterior barrier sprays are synthetic pyrethroids — chemicals modeled after naturally occurring compounds found in chrysanthemum flowers. They're highly effective against insects but have minimal impact on mammals at the concentrations used in residential pest control.
What "suitable for residential use once dry" Actually Means
When your technician says a treatment is "suitable for residential use once dry," here's what's happening chemically: wet product can be absorbed more easily through skin or paw pads. Once the treatment dries — typically 30-60 minutes for exterior applications — the active ingredient bonds to the treated surface and becomes significantly less bioavailable. It remains lethal to insects that walk across it but poses negligible risk to children or pets who touch the same surface.
Our standard recommendation: Keep kids and pets off treated surfaces until they're dry to the touch. For exterior treatments, this is typically 30-60 minutes. Interior treatments may take 1-2 hours depending on ventilation.
What We Use at Avada
Every product in our service toolkit is EPA-registered for residential use. We do not use any restricted-use pesticides in or around homes. Specific details:
- Exterior barrier sprays: Synthetic pyrethroid formulations applied to the foundation perimeter, eaves, and entry points
- Granular baits: Applied to landscaping beds where ants, earwigs, and crickets breed — enclosed granules are not attractive to children or pets
- Rodent bait stations: All bait stations are tamper-resistant and locked — designed to prevent access by children, pets, and non-target wildlife
- Mosquito treatments: Targeted misting applied to foliage where mosquitoes rest — not broadcast across open yard areas
Special Precautions for Pet Owners
Cats and dogs have different sensitivities to pest control products. A few things to know:
- Dogs are generally less sensitive to pyrethroids than cats. Our standard exterior treatments pose minimal risk to dogs after drying.
- Cats metabolize certain chemicals differently. We always ask about cats before treatment and adjust our product selection if interior treatment is needed near areas where cats spend time.
- Fish and reptiles — if you have outdoor fish ponds or aquatic pets, let us know before treatment. We take extra precautions to prevent any product from reaching water features.
- Pet food and water bowls — we never spray near pet food bowls. We recommend bringing them inside during treatment.
What About DIY Products?
Ironically, many over-the-counter pest control products available at hardware stores are actually higher-risk than professional formulations. Big-box store bug bombs and foggers, for example, distribute product indiscriminately throughout your living space — including surfaces where your children eat and play. Professional technicians apply product precisely where pests travel, minimizing exposure to living areas.
Our Safety Commitment
Every Avada technician is licensed through the Utah Department of Agriculture and Food. We carry full liability insurance and follow strict application protocols. If you have specific health concerns, allergies, or sensitivities, let us know — we can adjust our approach for your family's needs.
